A Day with my Nieces
1/1/2012 3:38:40 PM
It was glorious, that day with Lauren and Taylor. The old campus of the University of San Francisco was a welcome sight. The nostalgia came back for I have not visited the campus for years. The cathedral (or church, it was too big for it to be a church) loomed into sight. Koret Field, already a staple during Lauren’s tenure as a student at the university was to my left while Lone Mountain Campus seemed ever more enticing, looking ahead. Everything seemed to be in good order. Lauren’s apartment was right across from the steps to Lone Mountain Campus. And Lauren, as we were walking into their courtyard, peered out of her apartment window, wave and shouted a hello to us. I thought that their apartment was just those two windows, with one of them having a flower pot right out their window. But to my surprise, there were three more windows from which she stuck out her whole body to greet us.

What a welcome sight, Lauren’s apartment. Light envelops the entire place, even though fog blinded the sun from the outside. There was not much furniture. They have been living there for about four months only. There were some hidden rooms in that apartment which were not apparent. The bathroom was one. Before you can go into it, there was an anteroom and a door that hides it from the main hallway. And their closet was not a mere closet, but a room wherein Michael (Lauren’s fiancé) had his office and Lauren had a table full of her accoutrement. There was even a ceiling fan in it. Their bedroom was the best. This was where Lauren peered out from, a while ago. Here, light seemed to be in abundance. She pulled out a circular seat enough for a small person to curl up like a cat and sleep. I, being big, was not able to curl up but I sensed it can almost accommodate me if I were just a tad smaller. I looked out the window and saw a fantastic sight – the beautiful trees of Lone Mountain Campus, the rooftop of houses (the building was in the highest point of the hill, except for Lone Mountain Campus), and the cupola of St. Ignatius Church. I can also see the cross of the church of a monastery right across from St. Ignatius Church. Lauren said that they can hear the bell tolls ever so often emanating from St. Ignatius Church; that the sunset was a fantastic sight to behold; and the ships bellow their horn and the foghorn booms from some distant away.

We decided to eat breakfast but by the time we arrived at the eating place, it was already noon. We had good food and good conversations. This was near Ocean Beach from which we collected sand dollars. I first collected broken sand dollars but Lauren said that she would help me find and collect unbroken ones. She did and so did I on my own. Lauren pointed and picked up teardrop-size jelly fishes. Taylor, meanwhile, took photographs of sea creatures, the sea and the fog. She collected stones, tiny colorful stones which she can use to decorate her room, perhaps. And she, Lauren and I walked the lonely, fog-laden shores of Ocean Beach.

When we returned home, we ate some more and watched a movie while we waited for Michael to come home. When Michael arrived, we went to Napalitos and ate some more, this time, gourmet Mexican wherein I ate some sort of steak and had a beer. We returned home, full, finished the movie we were watching and soon, I had to say goodbye to them. I hugged them and kissed them for I shall not see them say goodbye to me in Vallejo, the next morning. It was sad and my heart breaks for I will miss them, our conversations, our exchanges of points of views, our eating and joking. But I look forward to my future endeavor to return to this place they call home and discover ever new things I have not yet discovered; or discover something they have yet to show.

One thing that caught my fancy was Lauren’s furnace. Grendle seemed to be a nice name. But she remembered a story about fire, thus she named it Calcifer.
