Smoking as a Hazard
7/9/2010 11:52:45 PM
In the midst of living "Life According to CNN," second-hand smoke seems somewhat trivial ...
"Smoking is dangerous," she said. "I start choking if I even see someone smoking." It made me stop and think. We all have a list of dangerous things, prioritorized according to the relative danger to us personally. Working at a hotel, and traveling around these country roads, my danger list goes a bit like this: [1] Robbers - I have been robbed at gunpoint five times during the past 35 years; [2] People who fail to pause at stop signs - most traffic fatalities in my county are caused by this; [3] Domestic violence in the lobby of my hotel - both the husband and the wife will kill you if you interfere. Honestly, smoking does not even make my danger list. But, I suppose, I am biased, for I have been smoking since I was 11 years old [that is 58 years at the time of this writing] and I have suffered no harm to lungs or other body parts. I also lived in the horrendous smog of the Los Angeles basin for six years; if you can survive that, a cigarette is unlikely to hurt you. Maybe my viewpoint is mitigated by a lifetime when I have known only two people who died of lung cancer, and neither one of them had ever smoked. If you wish to feel that smoking poses a clear and present danger to you, please feel free to choke to death if a smoker enters your room. It is your God-given right to do that. Meanwhile, I will keep a watchful eye out for rednecks who run stop signs, and I promise to try to avoid armed robbers, and those domestic violence issues will be handled via a quick 9-1-1 call. Smokers? Nah, not on my alarm-list this lifetime.
