Sunny Says 8/23/2008 9:01:31 PM Fickle Fay I woke up this morning hoping to see sunshine -- we are after all, the Sunshine State. Lo and behold bright rays of sunlight slid through the blinds. Happy day, I thought. Perhaps that pesky testy Tropical Storm Fay has finally gone. But no, she hasn't gone, she's still battering parts of Florida. What a menace. First she hit the Florida Keys and then sliped up across some of the lower east coast, then whipped over to the western side of our state (we aren't all that wide) and battered the southwestern coast. We live in the middle of the state and it was predicted that Ficke Fay would come our way so we put away anything outside that could fly around in the wind. We stocked up on some canned goods that could be eaten without the benefit of cooking should we lose power. But Fickle Fay must have felt the need to linger and she hung around for 20 hours dropping tons of water on us before she slowly slid north. The winds were not too bad. She picked up steam just north of us and dropped 30" of rain on the drought ridden conditions that had held us hostage for four years. Wow, our aquifirs must be celebrating. But that wasn't all she did. Fickle Fay then drifted to the northeast coast of Florida and continued to do her mischief, then took a sharp turn to the west and is now battering the Panhandle. Thank God there isn't much left of Florida that hasn't been drenched and blown apart by this Tropical Storm named Fay, a tropical storm that must have had big dreams of becoming a hurricane.
So this morning I reveled in the sunshine for a few hours but -- and there seems to always be a but, this afternoon we had a hum-dinger of a thunder storm. It was far worse than the lingering and annoying visit Fay had made to our corner of Florida. The rain was so dense that we couldn't see the house across the street and the wind tore at anything in its path. In fact the noise of the wind made me think for a minute that we might be in the path of a tornado. Thank God that wasn't the case.
Now late this afternoon, I still hear the rumbling of thunder nearby and the sky is a terrible concoction of fast moving clouds and dark patches that indicate a threatening storm.
Of course, I always shut down my computer when storms are nearby. I guess Florida computers are accustomed to the rollercoaster ride of on again, off again during our summers.
Let's hope that our beautiful sunshine will be with us tomorrow, that the sky will once again be that gorgeous blue and Fickle Fay will have run out of energy and go to wherever nasty storms go.
