My grandfather's poem that I read at my Dad's funeral.
Thinking of them both.
BURNING QUESTION
I with my body will not be confused –
I am not that which I have merely used;
Therefore, let not my body be preserved
When I complete the purpose it has served;
Let not my loved ones be compelled to view
My withered husk and pay their homage to
A plot of grass in which it is interred,
While I, at last set free- an uncaged bird –
Observe unseen and wish that I could spare
Them pain by telling them that I’m not there;
If resurrection of the body were
Conceivable, and reason to inter,
How could the church have sainted Joan of Arc,
Whose flesh and bone dissolved in flame and spark?
