A Person is not a Coward because they are Afraid

Fear is the root cause of all human suffering, both personal and collectively. It creates a barrier between mind and heart and it solidifies the ego. Fear allows us to become sheep, where we were once kings. It freezes us in a no man's land of illusions and denies us the ability to remember our true natures within our awareness. We store our fears in the unconscious, hoping to either forget or ignore them so they will just go away.
Fear never goes away; however, it may lay quiet or dormant inside until a memory or event triggers it and then the painful reality of its grip becomes apparent. The nightmares, cold sweats, and a feeling of "you are losing your mind" all begin to rush in because denial has made fear much bigger than it really is. Then one day you find yourself wildly sobbing like a baby in your room or on the floor and you wonder how it all got this way.
The need for the ego to be in control is part of the problem. Ego says to be able to survive in this world you have to be strong. You have to suck it up and move onward, denying how you truly feel. This is the first great lie of the ego: BURY WHAT YOU FEEL.
When you are not true to your real nature or the nature of an event, you begin to create a lie within your identity that the ego supports. While your feelings may be groaning an injustice and your emotions begging to express their horror, your ego says deny, deny, deny. Bury this event. Push aside this memory and pretend it never happened. Borrow an image of strength that you have been taught and hide behind it. Cover the truth of what you really feel. Truth never lies, hides or denies anything, it seeks to confirm within us the real nature of existence and ourselves. We know what is right deep inside and it is the job of truth to reveal that.
The mind and ego have a word for our failing to accept its counsel and bury our feelings. It is called: coward. It catches us in between the delusional world of what it tells us is strong and the reality of our feelings speaking to us from within. We are more than just men and women. We are conscious beings with a depth of spiritual character and knowledge that spans the universe. Since the ego does not want to loose its grip within us, we grovel at its command to deny all we feel or fear. Do not acknowledge the truth of what you are feeling.
When we hide the truth of what we are feeling behind the walls of our egos and allow the mind to create a fiction for us of events, we deny the healing that truth brings. Fear of cowardice, or a person lacking courage, is simply a fear of facing yourself. It is denying the authenticity of who you are and what you are experiencing. It is often how addictions begin and why they are so hard to stop. They become a way of coping with buried pain and avoiding the healing truth. They support the delusion of the ego and mind.
It is up to each of us to decide if and when we will begin to listen to those voices buried over time. They are not going to go away and they become louder as they years go on. What they are saying is that we have unfinished business to attend to and time is short.
Trust is always the first step towards healing and the revelation of love to ourselves. Trust what you feel and and allow those feelings to take you home, to a place where fear and cowardice are received with compassion and forgiveness, not for others necessarily, but yourself.
