Peter Boyles says to put your face out there.
5/8/2004 3:49:08 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

Peter Boyles called to tell me he had finished my book, liked it a lot, and thought I should take it another step and turn it into a movie. He loved the characters, the different messages, the journey of life. “You need to write the screen play.”

I asked him if he could point me to a book reviewer at the Rocky Mountain News and he said that I needed to push myself to the local book stores and book clubs and do book signings, because that’s what gets the attention.

I agree with him, but putting myself on display is not an adventure I enjoy. Book signings, unless one is famous, can be tortuous for the soul. In my two book signings I sold 32 books in the two hours, and although it was fun and exciting, it also put a dent in my reasoning of why I wrote the book in the first place. I wrote the book because I wanted to prove something to myself. This was my ultimate challenge to my dyslexia. I never had any intentions to publish the book at all. I was happy to just throw it in the closet when I was done, and go on to the next book. I do not like the attention. I just want it to get the reviews so it can run on its own.

I am currently 50% finished with my 2nd book, and have already done the outline and created some of the characters for my 3rd book. Public relations takes so much time away from my creative process, that I feel it is draining my energy.

I have a book club presentation that I have been asked to do and I will do it because I have not done one before. In book 3, one of my characters will be a writer, so I need to experience this to capture the essence of being a writer. Part of me hates doing it while the other half shouts RESEARCH!!
