That's What I Think
6/26/2012 10:42:39 AM    [ Flag as Spam or Inappropriate ]

So as promised here is part II

I was on the freeway for about 2 miles. When I got off the ramp there was a sign indicating Frontage Road Left! Oh my, I had found it again!! Yay for me!! So I took it and it was the same road I’d been on before, now I’m heading west! I go about 10 miles and come to the tree farm where I had begun the frontage road trip when I mistakenly got on the freeway in the beginning. So this is where it would have taken me. The same sand/gravel/dirt road was there but I was scared to take so I got on the freeway again (Yuck) and headed west. I went two miles here and exited at an off ramp for Irrigon, Oregon. And it happened to be the same road I was on when I took the wrong turn in the beginning that got me on the freeway heading east. So on a dare to myself I took this side road just to see if it took me to the tree farm. I got as far as the beginning of the tree farm and to my right was a big NO TRESPASSING sign. I was confused because this dirt road eventually ended up meshing with the paved frontage road. This dirt road in fact paralleled the highway like the frontage road. I'm thinking to myself that I could take it..but didn’t want a ticket for trespass. Sheesh. I turned around and went home to Boardman. I had taken about two hours now to practice going to Hermiston and I was done.

When Frank got home I told him what I’d found in the way of alternate roads. So we decided to go to Hermiston for shoes and we would take the roads I’d found. When we got to Irrigon we took the frontage road that would eventually lead us to the tree farm. Frank being braver than me, barreled right on past the tree farm and trespass sign and off we went. His reasoning was since the trespass sign faced north it meant we couldn’t go onto the tree farm but the road itself was county and therefore ours to use. And I was right, eventually this road hooked up with the paved frontage road. I had told him that when further ahead, the frontage road ran out, we would be at Highway exit 179. It would mean one mile on the freeway. We exited and took the gravel road which took us to the 182 exit. So that would mean on the way back by this route I would have to drive on I84 for 2 miles to get to the frontage road beginning (or end depending on which direction I was going). But other than that I would have only back roads to drive on to get to Hermiston. We got to Hermiston and found a shoe store and promptly got a flat tire!

Now you might call this destiny, convenient, or Karma. We looked at it as good Karma because what would have happened if I’d gotten the flat on that gravel road? There I would be stuck in the middle of nowhere-ville without recourse. So, we had a good laugh on that. Good old Les Schwab rescued us at the shoe store and fixed our flat at the Les Schwab center. Free of Charge! What a great company! We set for home following my back road route and made it without incident.

Frank’s opinion is that it is riskier to drive the back road route. I tend to disagree. I mean yeah I could get a flat, maybe the risk for that is higher on an unpaved road. But a semi-truck could crush me on the freeway. I think the back road risk is lower to bodily harm than the freeway. I have always felt this way. My anxiety believes this too. Right or wrong I do what I have to do.

Friday morning arrives and I am visibly nervous. I have psyched myself out! I am scared to drive for “real” this route. What if I’m arrested for trespassing? Could that happen? What if I get a flat? What if I have a panic attack on that two mile stretch of road? What if, what if, what if, what if…….I can what if myself into panic. STOP it now!

I tell myself “You are going! Luka needs his shots and you have a route planned. A route that has been driven twice and it works!” So, I bundle up my water, nuts, gum, and dog. Out of the park I go. Lah Di Da! “Yeah right”, I’m thinking.

I actual do well. I am on the sand/gravel/dirt road and I fly by the no trespassing sign (buh bye) and actually enjoy the bumps in this road as if it were a carnival ride. I get to the paved frontage road and end up going about 55 miles an hour. I arrive at the exit where I will have to get ON the freeway, and feel somewhat itchy and pressure in my lungs…but onward I go. I breathe a little faster while on the freeway which isn’t good for hyperventilation symptoms, but I realize I am alone on the freeway and take comfort in that. I speed along and arrive at exit 179 fairly quickly. I even gave a quick thought to continuing on the highway to exit 182! Eeep…I thought better of it. I decided to stick with the plan so I exited at 179 and took the gravel road to exit 182. I arrived! I found the Vets office and I was fifteen minutes early!

I leave town an hour later and take the same route back without incident. Good girl! (I did a small bit of shopping while there.)

What does this prove or mean? Well for a fifteen minute vet appointment I went through a lot preparation and angst to drive somewhere on my own. Why you might ask; because I want to be as self sufficient as I can. I guess for my own pride and to show Frank I am not house bound or RV Park bound. But, also because if I didn’t do this, it would be a form of giving in to the disease. I never want to feel like anxiety wins. I want to control my environment, so I do. Even if it means giving hours to preparing a route to go somewhere for fifteen lousy minutes. Some may see this as crazy.. Some may say what is the point? I say, “Man the torpedoes and full steam ahead!”

Cheers, Karla 
