The Need of Reading, the Lust of Writing 11/6/2006 4:42:37 AM Dear friends, readers and fellow authors,
Gradually, my return to your company is beginning to take more definite contours! ;0)
I’m finally catching up on readings, and, albeit still in a “one or two at a time” rhythm, I have actually been able, at last, to leave some comments which will, hopefully, express how much I have enjoyed such readings. It has been a pleasure to revisit some “old” favourites, in whose writings I have always found fresh factors of wonderment, and it has been with great delight that I have been “discovering” many new talents, whose works I will most certainly be following with all the interest of one to whom – as my bio used to state and still is and will always be an intrinsic truth – “reading is a need, like breathing”.
As my bio also used to state, and because it still is also an intrinsic truth that “writing is a lust, like living”, I have been - and will go on - indulging in such “lust”, and I wish to thank you all for the extraordinary feedback you have been kindly offering me – and especially, for the warm, welcoming atmosphere with which you have been surrounding the “strangers” I have been introducing to you. I’m talking, of course, of the literary characters which I have created and whose works I have begun to share with you: Otsana, a short story and chronicle writer, and Paula Paixão Botelho “pedramares”, a poet.
Someone asked me, not too long ago, if Otsana and Paula were my heteronyms, and my answer was and is, definitely not. They are not even pen-names I may feel the need to use when writing in different styles or genres – they are, quite simply, and as I said, literary characters, created by Alexandra Oliveira, the very genuine name of this friend and admirer of yours, who signs and will go on signing her own works as Alexandra* ~ OneLight*®, as a tribute to her partnership, in life and in the arts, with Joseph Randell Sherman (Joseph* ~ OneLight*®). Paula and Otsana could have “emerged” from my imagination as, let’s say, a spy and a cook, or a dancer and a painter, or a lawyer and a doctor, both or each one of them playing significant roles in some fiction novel or in a series of stories, but, somehow, they “sprang to life” as writers, instead, each with a personality and a writing style of their own.
Such is this “lust” of writing, dear ones, and it will indeed be a privilege to go on sharing with you, simultaneously, my works, and whatever “creations” my “creations”, Paula and Otsana, may also come up with! ;0)
Additionally, I would like to close this message with an auspicious “opening”: In the next few days, I will be honoured to introduce yet one more new poet to you – NOT a literary character, though, but a real person, whom I have already mentioned in one of my most recent poems (“Poem on a painting by Georg Baselitz”). His name is Jorge Vicente, and he lives in the South of Portugal. His extraordinary poetry has been published in several anthologies and in “A Bic(a)”, a book co-authored by Jorge and two other Portuguese fellow poets, Constantino Alves and José Gil. Jorge was responsible for the first “sketch” of what would become the “Entrecampos” workshop of collective poetry – a free association of poets, who have been creating extraordinary joint works on previously proposed themes, the two most successful ones so far having been the poems “Gente” (People), in which 21 poets collaborated, and “Leveza” (Lightness), a record, co-authored by 27 poets! Although he speaks English fluently, Jorge Vicente does not feel comfortable enough to try and write poetry in this language – so different from our native one – so I have recently challenged him to translate some of his poems from their original versions in Portuguese, and, while admitting that he does not feel too comfortable with translations, either, he challenged me, in turn, to do that for him! LOL! I have gladly accepted, grateful for such honour, and only hope I’ll be able to convey, in the translated versions, all the musicality and unique imagery present in Jorge’s amazing original poems, which are – in my humble opinion – well deserving of a much wider diffusion than they have had so far, as well as of international recognition. I’ll be very much looking forward to hearing about your own impressions – so, in advance, thank you for welcoming Jorge Vicente, whose poetry I’ll be posting very soon, and for your feedback.
And with my wishes that you may all – as I’ll do my best to - continue to “dream as if you were writing life upon lines of love, and to love and live as is you writing both upon lines of dream”, here go many
