A few good laughs for the weekend! LOL! 5/26/2007 4:08:04 AM This is an amazing yet very true story. Hope you may enjoy it! THE THINGS THESE TEACHERS ASK!
(Or the true story of a brilliant answer by a brilliant student!)
Dr. X (anonymity kept for protection of privacy), Dean of the Physics Department at the University of Aveiro – Northern Portugal – is famous for asking questions as weird as “Why do airplanes fly?” – and, in 1997, the whole content of the final test to be taken by his students in the discipline of “Transmission of Movement, Mass, and Heat – level II” was this single question: “IS HELL EXOTHERMIC OR ENDOTHERMIC? – Please justify your answer”.
What he wanted the students to tell him, of course, was if, in their perspective, “hell” is a system that releases, or oppositely, receives heat, and most students based their answers on the Law of Boyle or other similar concepts – but one particular student, whom we will call Y, offered the following answer:
“Firstly, we postulate that, if soul exists, then it must have some sort of mass. If it does, then so does an agglomeration of souls. Now, in what percentage are souls going into and coming out of hell? I believe we can safely assume that once a soul goes into hell, it never comes out again. There are, therefore, no souls coming out.
As for the souls that go in, let us make a brief analysis of the perspectives of the existing religions. Some of those religions preach that if you don’t believe in them, then you will go to hell. Since there are other similarly oriented religions, and each person cannot have more than one religion at a time, we can therefore easily foresee that ALL souls go to hell.
Meanwhile, with the world’s ongoing rates of population growth and proportional mortality, we can expect an exponential increase of souls in hell – and this takes us, inevitably, to a consideration of the rates of change in the volume of hell. According to the Law of Boyle, in order for the pressure and temperature in hell to be constant, the relation between the mass of souls and the volume of hell must also be a constant one. There would be, therefore, two options:
1- If hell expands at a lower rate than that of the afflux of souls, then the pressure and the temperature in hell will rise, till it explodes;
2- If, oppositely, hell expands at a higher rate than that of the afflux of souls, then the pressure and temperature in hell will drop, till it freezes.
Which of the above options would, therefore, be the correct one? Should we accept what Teresa, my sophomore fellow student, told me the other day, and which was that “their will be a cold night in hell before I go to bed with you”, and taking into consideration that I have NOT as yet been successful in my attempts to make love with her, then option nr. 2 is not the correct one – and hell is, therefore, EXOTHERMIC!”
Student Y obtained the only “100%” qualification in this final test of Physics. (And, in my opinion, he deserves to go to bed with Teresa.)
LOL!
