Time to do what you know you should

The thing is, I’m still tired. You see, I haven’t been able to find the time to rest as I know I should. But then, there have been too many of those things one does because one knows one should. Things one does for others, because of others, often – oh, so often – incompatible with those one knows one should do for, because of oneself. It’s not so much a matter of being either altruistic or selfish; from someone else’s point of view, you may well be considered selfless to near nonentity, while tending to the needs and requirements of others instead of your own… until it’s that particular someone’s needs or requirements you fail to tend to, and then you become monstrously self-centered. It’s more of a matter of responsibility; suddenly, life makes you responsible for more beings and things and decisions than you feel you can deal with. If you don’t fit in the “constantly complaining” category, or indeed in the “why me” one (or in the “two of the above plus blaming the universe” one), you know you have to establish priorities, so you can deal with as much as possible; and you know that this will not always be simple and that your discernment will often be questioned, both by others and – most importantly – by yourself. This is, however, what responsibility – conscientiousness, reliability – is about; there is a job to be done, so, even if you would much rather somebody else took it over – and bear in mind that not always the “what can I do to help” question means that somebody is genuinely willing to get off their ass and actually help – you know that you just have to go ahead and do it. But, with all this, if you don’t fit in the super-hero category, or indeed in the “omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient” one, you also know that you’ll feel tired – and that “tired”, not being a category at all, may be just a simplistic description of your state of being physically exhausted, mentally drained, and emotionally weary; a state of being that will, sooner or later, affect anyone who fits in this category: HUMAN.
Yes, that’s what I am; human. And the thing is, although, as such, I’m still tired, for I haven’t found the time to rest as I know I should, I’m grateful for finding the time to “do what I have to do so that (the time when) I can do what I want to do” will find me… quite ready for it!
