PEARL HARBOR DAY
Why and how was our Greatest Generation special? It was a time of unquestioned love of country. It was a time when all Americans proudly proclaimed their worship of God. Following those beliefs in God and country, many young Americans accepted the call to save the world, valiantly accomplished that mission, then returned home from WWII with higher ambitions of even greater success for self and country. Everyone respected and supported those heroes who had demonstrated new confidence in themselves and the brave new America.
What happened to those dreams that generation showed us? They became obscured twenty years later with Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, which put social justice ahead of personal dreams and aspirations. Jimmy Carter walked in Johnson’s footsteps and tried to make those tracks even deeper. Our current president is up to his knees in those footsteps; apologizing for America’s blessings, demonizing personal success, and offering free handouts - their fair share - to those who have been conditioned to believe it’s their right.
Can America recover from this assault on our dreams and aspirations of even greater success for us as individuals and for America? Perhaps. But only if we acknowledge that America is blessed and deserving of that opportunity. Where to start? Education. America is special, and our students must never be taught otherwise, as they now are in expanding multi-cultural programs. We are Americans. God bless America.

EDUCATION LOST
I began my quest to help improve education about fifteen years ago by getting over 200 supporters to help finance printing 4000 copies of a booklet I wrote, titled, ‘How To Learn.’ The booklet was distributed free in the county to support an experimental program we called, ‘SaYes,’ which was the acronym for ‘Study Attitudes Yield Education Success.’
Fifth-graders who signed a form promising to try to improve their grades were given a SaYes pin and were eligible for a savings bond at the end of each grading period. Three places were recognized with a $500 bond, a $250 bond and a $100 bond. It took a lot of footwork and phone calls to get enough local contributors to buy those bonds - but the local community always came through.
The governor’s senior education advisor participated in the recognition ceremonies. The Mississippi governor at that time was Kirk Fordice. Of course, for privacy purposes, the school counselors were the only ones who had access to students’ grades. For award purposes, we were allowed to know the amount of grade improvement, which was our target. That program ended when I moved from that area.
What were the results of SaYes? Those who signed the form and participated, mostly average and below average students, raised their grades by at least 5 points.
I learned three important things from interacting with those students and others who participated. 1. Most high-achieving students don’t need encouragement or support. Just get out of their way and they will find a way to succeed by themselves. They prefer that self-reliant independence. 2. The next tier know they are capable of better results, they just haven’t focused their priorities on education. There are too many other distractions and fun things to do. After all, studying is hard and takes a lot of time. 3. The bottom third (most but not all) don’t seem to relate education to success. It’s my opinion that this bottom third is more deeply affected by their family and peer culture than by logic and understanding.
What does this all mean? It means our education system will never be improved as long as education leadership and politics focus their efforts on a typical student. There is no such thing as a typical student. It’s surprising that great students can even survive in the oppressive and politically-correct environments they must endure to find personal success.
The second tier students must be allowed an avenue to be recognized for their efforts to encourage more effort. The third tier, those who cannot connect education results to personal success need something extra, perhaps beginning with a class on why it’s personally important to respect themselves, and to love and understand the founding principles of our great country.
