Friendship, what does it mean to me? 5/22/2011 7:57:16 AM My views on friendship and a little about my friends. Before I tell you a little about what friendship means to me, let me tell you a little about myself. I was born and grew up in the 50s. For most of us, the 50s are now ancient history, well not so ancient but far enough away. The 50s were a special time: a time when people cared about people; when friends stuck together like glue; when your word was your bond and a handshake was all that was needed; probably a simpler time, but perhaps a better time.
As a youngster in school I was picked on daily due to my limited eyesight. But that's okay. I'm stronger today than perhaps I would've been just because of this. It has taught me to look beyond a person's shortcomings and/or handicaps and to look at what's best in them, and that's a good thing.
Anyway, I didn't have many friends and that's okay. To this day, I don't have a zillion friends, the ones I do have mean very much to me. I consider my friends an extension of my immediate family. Let me tell you a little bit about good friends of mine...
Tim-I met him in the sixth grade and we have been friends ever since, that's almost 48 years now. We've done a lot together, have a lot of fun and are still close to this day. I spent many wonderful hours at his mom and dad's house. To this day I still call his mom... MOM TWO or MOM TOO.His dad passed away recently; I miss him very much. Oh the stories I could tell...
Georgie-I met Georgie while I was going to college in 1971. We have been friends ever since, that's almost 40 years this year. We've done a lot together over the years; I've watched him get married, have a family, and grow to be a wonderful guy. I made a promise to his mom before she passed away. I told her that Georgie would be my friend for life, and I meant it. In fact, I'm going to see him today.
Chuck-I met Chuck in college, at New Paltz, in 1974. We have been friends ever since, but I lost touch with him and only contacted him again in 2010. If you look at my page you will see that I have written a poem, the only one entitled, T"That's Chuck, he's my friend'. Take a moment to read that and you'll see what I mean.
Over the years, Carla and I have made other friends. I should like to talk about them another time. Thank you and may God bless.
