Seasonal writing
5/18/2011 7:41:32 AM
When is the best time to write? Morning? Evening? Summer? Winter? I find I'm in a quandary.
I don't think this blog fits into Literary Criticism at all, but where else can I settle it? Forgive me if it doesn't fulfil the promise of the category.

I wonder when you prefer to write? Are you a morning person or an evening person, a winter person or a summer person? Or does none of this make any difference to you?

I think I've changed. Time was (in my youth) when I was a night owl, able to work, dance, party at all hours, but now I'm definitely a morning person. I prefer to write in the mornings and I think I write better in the mornings than later on.

I'm also a winter writer. The summer is so full of allurement - blue skies, sunshine, and the out-of-doors. I don't like to see all that largesse going to waste, so feel constrained to use it whenever possible. And you have to remember I live in the UK, where the weather is less certain than in some other parts of the world. We Brits hug our sunshine to us as if it's never going to be seen again.

In the winter, it's a very different story. Then it requires considerable effort to prise myself out of the house, and I like nothing better than to sit at my computer and write.

Just at the moment I'm in a bit of a quandary. I have my next novel all planned out, down to the last detail (not that it'll stay that way once the characters have their head, but at least it's all ready for starting), but it's coming up summer. What do I do? Start writing - knowing it will be difficult to stop and I shall miss all that gorgeous golden weather - or sit tight and enjoy the summer while my fingers are itching to get writing?

Perhaps it will have to be a little of each. But the danger of that is that when I reach that difficult half-way mark - you know, the part where the end never seems to come any nearer and it all become hard slog - I might be tempted to give up.

That would never do. I think I'm going to be forced to enjoy the summer after all...
