A Bit of Chichat
1/9/2012 2:49:56 PM

The trials of travelling to be with family at Christmas and coping with their pets.
On 31st December 2011 my husband and I sailed on the "Spirit" Tasmania to spend Christmas with our son and his fiancee who live in Canberra. We arrived early at the Port of Melbourne. Our intention was to connect to the Hume Highway with the assistance of our new GPS system. Once of the ship the Tom Tom led us on a scenic tour that covered half of Victoria.
Eventually with assistance from locals we managed to locate the Hume Highway after two hours of literally tearing our hair out in the process! Our destination for our overnight stay was at a quaint town called Rutherglen. We were booked into an old, run-down pub called Poachers Paradise. The town had been a bustling town in the late nineteenth century during the frantic Gold-rush era. Now the town relied on its wine growing districts for survival. Alas, we arrived three hours late - too late to book into any wine tours.
What mattered most was the friendliness of the townspeople who obligingly gave use precise directions about which roads to travel the next day. Dinner at the pub was delicious - "Parm and Pot" - i.e.a parmigiana with choice of topping and a pot of beer: total cost, $14.00.
After a good night's sleep and well-cooked breakfast, we set off to Canberra and had a smooth trip to the capital. Our son was busy cleaning up the house when we arrived. he introduced us to their cat, Chitchat, a pretty Tabby who was friendly to us. She had an outdoors cat run because in that particular area of Canberra, domestic cats had to be confined to their owners' houses and gardens. The fine for allowing a cat to stray was $1,000! We were told this on our arrival, however, we were not sufficiently alert to notice that Chitchat took the opportunity to escape the house while we were unloading the car. Immediately we dropped everything and scanning the streets and houses with high fences called out "Chitchat, Chitchat" all over the neighborhood. It was so fortuitous that a group of ravens were congregating menacingly and Chitchat had second thoughts about her adventure. She raced back to her yard. My husband was the hero who discovered her first. What relief to have her back! Had a neigbour reported her escape my son would have been fined. After that episode we tried to be careful with the exterior doors but she chose her moment well for the next escape. The next day I had left the back door open just a fraction when I her my son yelling: "Close the door, close the door" in a frantic voice. He bolted down the stairs and with a deft left kick diverted Chitchat's direction into the cat door. Whew! That wasn't the last time she tried. We were on the point of a breakdown even Christmas had started.
