More Than a Coincidence
8/27/2012 6:46:48 PM
Two mystifying dreams about a long-lost friend. What do they mean?
Last Saturday morning I awakened with memories of a vivid dream I had experienced during the night. It was so memorable I resolved to write it down before I forgot it. Out of curiosity I read my last entry that was written on June 21st, 2012.Was it a coincidence that I discovered that the subject matter was exactly the same; that on both occasions I had dreamed about my schoolfriend, Peggy Stutterd. (In my story list you can find "Innocents Abroad in Tasmania"about our backpacking adventures in 1962.That story displays a photo of us that was taken at the end of our holiday.)

Whenever I write down my dreams I mostly start off recording them in the present tense because this strategy allows me to recall details with more clarity. In that second dream I wrote: 'I have heard that Peggy is living in New Zealand and I have flown over to meet up with her. She is living in a rural area there. Unfortunately I cannot remember how I received this news. One morning I set out to visit her. The weather is gorgeously sunny, the air crisp, the sky unpolluted and of Cerulean blue hue. While strolling through lush pastures I see sheep undergoing the process of being shorn; their fleeces are pure white and huge. They look more like clouds than solid bundles of wool.

Passers-by greet me by name. I am bemused by their friendliness. Am I some kind of celebrity! In a shop I am intently looking at some merchandise when suddenly I hear my name called: in an accent that brings back memories of a familiar voice I had heard years ago.I turn around and see Peggy. She looks so well dressed, her figure trim (it wasn't when last I saw her.)She is now considerably taller than me and has a more mature outlook. We hug each other tightly, our faces beaming with delight ay our reunion. The years roll away and we become the giggling teenagers of yesteryear. I just love being in her presence - there is such a warmth about her that that I wish to stay with her forever.

On awakening that warmth remained. Two years ago I learned at my 50th Brisbane State High School Reunion that Peggy had died a long time ago somewhere in Queensland. No one could give me any details of the circumstances surrounding her death. The last time I saw her she was in a rush and couldn't stop to talk much. She had graduated as a teacher and was working in an outback school. At that time I was no longer living at home and frequently changed addresses. However Peggy's memory is alive and dwells in my subconscious - somewhere timeless. Our friendship is recorded in my autobiography "Gaining a Sense of Self".
