A Welsh-born poet and doctor, Dannie Abse originated this idea (quote) and it makes me think and muse.
"Are all men in disguise except those crying?" (From Encounter At A Greyhound Bus Station- 1986)
As we (men) weep, the shades and blinds that hide us form the blaring view of others is shredded. It is usually such a rare occurance among us that we reveal much in its wake.
But are we only UN-disguised at these times? Do tears awaken a reality within that can't be found when we stare the world down with our masculine verve?
Men are powerful from their refusal to cry. It is a refusal, not only a lesson the world teaches boys. Yet, our deepest strength is broken sometimes and from this moment of complete relase, when grief and sorrow overwhelm a man, then these precious tears are like a violent earthquake.
We are no more real, nor less real, when we weep or when we don't. We exist within and apart from this outward expression of deep felt emotion. Still, there is a truth, a 'laying bare' that can be known when a man cries.
The Great Personae, the Fale Front, can exist within heaving shoulders or calm complacent face. It is the facade we must observe in all its varied forms.
