Emperors of Darkness
9/12/2004 7:42:05 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

The first draft of Emperors of Darkness is now finished.

I kept track of the time it took me to write this one. I started on May 23, 2004, and ended on Sept. 10, 2004. That's approximately 100 days, or four months.

Including the glossary at the end of this one, Emperors is 135,000 words long. That comes out to about 320 pages.

This is the second novel I've written this year, and the third in the last year and a half. I have sketchy ideas of where to take the series next, so I could start outlining book 4, The Soulstone, right now, but I'm going to try to give myself some time off from writing so that I can get settled in here at college and get into the swing of it. Then, I'll edit Emperors and make myself a "sample copy" through Cafepress.

Cafepress is great because I can include the pictures I drew for my book after I digi-scan them, and it's cheaper to design the book myself in Pagemaker. Also, I have complete control. The only problem is that I can't get my books on the distribution channels like Ingram's or Amazon, because I have no idea how to do that.

I made myself a sample copy for The Risen, and it turned out splendid. I think this one is going to turn out great. I already have three or four pictures for Emperors that I'm thinking about including. I could go as high as one per chapter, but that means I have to draw seventeen more pictures, and I think that's too many. Five is more like it. Then there will be one for every four chapters. I'm going to need a table of contents too, but I'm sure that's no problem, the page numbers will be tough to put in, though. They are always changing.

I've thought about doing this for all the series, including Seventh and Rhythm as well. I would have pictures in all of them, and all new covers that are more exciting than what are on them now. I mean, really, does swirly blue and green impress anyone? No? I thought not. I like pictures of other lands and strange beasts myself, but that's too much to ask from my artistic skills, so Photoshop is going to have to come to the rescue. If I did this for all my books, I would call it the "author's definitive edition." That would be something I could really be proud of.

Please check out the proposed covers for Emperors of Darkness and The Risen in the "Books" section.
