Are they serious?

My publisher is bugging me.
In the last month, my publisher, iUniverse Inc., has sent me three emails concerning co-op advertising. One was about doing something in the New York Times, another for USA Today, and now today I got one for Sirius Satellite. That's well and good, and I'm not against a little advertising now and then, but they want something over $2,000 at least for these ads! Come on, no one is going to pay attention to my book with the crappy cover it has, and I don't know who to blame for that. Certainly some of the fault there is mine. But people are more likely to think my frigging books through iUniverse are legal briefs than anything else. Get real.
No, I think that all that would happen if I did this is that I'd lose a bunch of money. Just like when I had my books put up on Amazon.com. No one's bought them through that outlet, and now I've just learned that they aren't available through local bookstores like Waldenbooks, not even on special order as far as I know. What a waste of time. So unless iUniverse can prove that co-op advertising works (i.e. that it gets results) I won't follow through on it.
