Beginning of the End of the Beginning

In our beginning we are but the first smear on a vast, unknown canvas; and as we grow we see the other colors along our boundaries. We notice our little area getting bigger and realize it must mean something we don't understand yet.
Then our smear takes a shape we don't recognize, but the immense unknown still stretches farther than our eyes can see, and we have no idea where we will be going.
As time passes and the canvas is half filled with our colors, shapes and textures, we find we can observe where we have been and now believe we know the boundaries of where we can go, but are not sure if we actually will get that far -- the artist could leave us unfinished. Our epitaphs would read: Cypress Tree Unfinished - Sunset Unfinished - Hood Canal by Night Unfinished - The Happy Clown Unfinished - Still Life Unfinished.
The time finally arrives when we have filled the canvas with a story that has a beginning and an end. Then we have found the boundaries, we have felt the edges with our fingertips. We can go no further. So we are allowed to step away from the painting and look upon it as a whole. We can site each detail that confused us. We can appreciate the perfect blends we didn't know were blends before.
And the only other ones to know what a magnificent masterpiece we were are those who leave the painting with us, those who have left before, those who will leave after.
