Lines on being another year older.
It's my birthday today; that makes me a Libra, doyen of diplomacy, style guru or whatever. I quite like Astrology, it's a harmless bit of nonsense and sometimes horoscopes come true. We Librans are also supposed to be lazy. In some ways I am, it depends what day of the week it is.
I'm 45 today. God how scary that sounds. I only feel about 25, especially now I obsessively go to the gym most days. Well, I can't have everything flopping around and getting in the way. It's nice these days to be able to sit closer to my PC keyboard.
My AD picture was taken this year, so I suppose I don't yet look 45, which is something. It depends how much sleep I get. If it's only five hours or less, the puffiness around the eyes turns into saddlebags or travel trunks. On a good day (7-8 hours sleep the night before), I still get patronized by women who think they're older than me, or checked out by younger men, who have no idea how loudly they would scream if they knew my real age. Editing Poetry Life & Times is often guaranteed to deprive me of a large chunk of a night's sleep. Yet I carry on with it; interviewing poets and featuring their work is a great pleasure to me, even though I sometimes stay up until 3.00am, working on it.
So why the confession about my age here, you may ask? A friend showed me part of something one of my critics wrote on AD (and later removed) - it was not too insulting really, but from what he had written, he had assumed I was young and unqualified to edit an ezine. So just for the record, I am 45 years old, and have been editing Poetry Life & Times for six years. The Resident Poets, Jan Sand and Richard Vallance, sometimes assist if I wish to get a second opinion on a poem which may or may not be featured. If advice on a poem is asked for by the author, I give it. Advice is usually only appreciated if given when asked for. And you can't please everyone all of the time. So what? I live with that, it doesn't bother me.
I had better close here... need to get ready to go out for a birthday meal tonight, with Tom and some friends. Many thanks to my AD friends who wished me a happy birthday, and a special thank you to Debashish Haar, who wrote a very clever acrostic birthday poem for me - thanks Debs! And thanks C.S. Snow, for your email greeting!
