Back in the UK 2/18/2006 11:38:23 AM Today I returned to the UK after spending a week on business in Florida (quite a transition - from 81 degrees and sunny in Tampa to 32 and foggy in London). Two occurrences highlighted the fact that I was no longer in the good ol' USA:
- a few hundred demonstrators were protesting the Mohammed cartoons in Trafalgar Square as I passed by in a black cab. Along with the obligatory anti-Denmark placards there were the usual anti-USA signs ( "Bush is the #1 Terrorist,".etc.)
- I happened to tune in BBC Radio 4 and came across a discussion of a new work by Kurt Vonnegut. I don't know if the speakers (which included one American voice in the group) were paraphrasing Vonnegut or were expressing their own group viewpoint, but one made a statement to the effect that America was now as hated and reviled around the world as much as the Nazis once were.
The people on the world who hate America are most likely members of one (or perhaps both) of two groups:
- an odious, archaic religion that keeps its believers firmly ensconced in the Middle Ages
- an equallly disgusting, leftwing ideology that espouses shackling human endeavor (and the human spirit) with the noxious burdens of the we-know-what's-good-for-you nanny state and an amoral, one-thing-is-as-good-as-another nihilism.
A pox on both their houses . . .
Post a Comment new!
