We Didn't Expect So Many Wonderful Selections...
7/10/2006 11:59:12 AM
I don't know how many of you hate reading that little slip of paper, or nowadays email, that says, once again, what you've submitted isn't quite up to the editorial staff's standards for publication. I've had the chance to deal with three of these this week. Everytime I think I'm used to the ego blow, and that I'll handle the next one better, along comes another, and I'm consumed with self-doubt again. The questions mostly run along the lines of "Am I not 'cutting'edge' enough,' 'Am I too boring, too amateurish, to middle aged to pretend to be a poet'." If I knew there was a definitive answer, I'd make a change, someplace. But, I look at what I've written, what stories I've chosen to tell, and I can't seem to find another thing I'd like to say about my subjects.

Back to the screen, and the idea file. I'll pull out mt Deutsch, my Jusdson, and my Bugeja, read a little Margaret Atwood and William Shakespeare, and see what else I can come up with.
