Daughter's birthday
1/26/2006 1:28:58 PM
24 years ago today I became a mother for the first and only time
Happy birthday, Anna.

All of the stages of her life have had some aspect of enjoyment attached to them. But now I find having a grown up child brings the greatest rewards. I enjoy spending time with her. Gone are the worries of responsibility for her safety and manners. What remains is the knowledge that I did all right as a mother.

I say that now but I wonder if she'll go into therapy at some point as many of my own age have and find that I have been the cause for any and all maladies in her life.

Perhaps it was the cloth diapers or the no sugar rule or maybe I was too attentive or too absent or too permissive or too strict or perhaps I was just too human.

Here's the real truth: most of us do the best we can with the tools we have been given. The day I made that realization about my own mother was the day I grew up.
