Specters Browsing through the Isles at Burke Used Books in Falls Church, Virginia.

A wondrous world surrounded me at Burke Used Books. I couldn’t help but notice a somber dressed Abraham Lincoln thumping through the history section of the store, a sudden snort escaping his lips as he read. Probably a piece of history that was not quite true, I thought. Then, as two customers walked up to the register with monster books that had to do with computer programming, I happened to notice an elephant’s long trunk swaying up and down between the two people with wide ears flapping back and forth. But it was soon distracted by a sword, a laser one at that. It had something to do with Star Wars, I was sure.

I shook my head, a smile on my face and looked down another corridor lined with books. There, to my amazement, stood the Creature from The Black Lagoon, his finned hands on his hips, shaking his fish head as he looked upon his image swimming beneath a human woman. I laughed to myself. Yes, yes. He was probably wondering how we could have possibly believed him to have fallen madly in love with her when she hadn’t a fin on her. Of course, the Mare, in Drown in Fear, would have been more his type.

Across the street is a cemetery. I mention this for that is where my father is buried, and I just knew he’d find his way to Burke Used Books. Yes, he had this thing about King Kong. I could just imagine him walking by our tables, picking up a copy of Black Rush, thumbing through the pages and smiling when he discovered the novel had something to do with Vampires in DC. He liked politics too. *smile*

I had a great time at the store, a true book lover’s heaven. Even Poe would have had a hard time leaving without a book within his hands, a chapbook perhaps—the Mid-Atlantic Horror Professional’s Chapbook. Maybe, even a copy of mine. Hey, one can dream. *big grin*
