Bad to the Bone Blog Poetry
9/23/2005 9:40:27 AM
What is it? The stuff of lovesick puppies...

But This Too Shall Pass

Oh, all we writers have it, perhaps some have more than others, stuff unfit to print because it's too much soul-weepiness or creepiness or pining after someone mixed with little thought to poetic justice. I've posted enough of mine outside my blog for comments, sometimes just for fun, to publish a Bad to Nordette's Bone Poetry Book. Even master poets we've had to study in school have had bad poetry stashed in journals that scholars have unearthed after those poets' deaths. Some people don't realize it, but not all Shakespeare's poems are considered by scholars to be masterpieces.

We're lucky today. Thanks to the Internet and our being rash sometimes, people get to read our trash online via our weblogs instantly, if we choose to put it out there. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't.

Perhaps I do so today in a fit of stupidity, or maybe with Rita bearing down on Galveston and probably about to dump more water on my hometown of New Orleans before the city can dry out from Katrina, I'm in a what-the-hell mood. In any case, I'm posting two of the most maudlin, gushy poems I've written in a while right here to torture anyone who cares to read them. It's the kind of stuff that later you wonder, "What the hell was I thinking?" I didn't even want anybody to know that. But if going through a divorce from a man you were married to for 24 years, having to listen to lies and nonsense about yourself for two years in several courtrooms, needing a kidney, and then having your world turned upside down by your hometown flooding and having most of your family, including your aging and ill parents who've been your anchor, become displaced and scattered doesn't make you see how unimportant nursing certain insecurities is, then I don't know what will.

So, here are my two contributions to mush, maudlin, lovesick drivel for the month of September. Don't say I didn't warn ya.

Subtext
By Nordette Adams

Men: strange birds...
If I'd revealed the vision mirrored when first you came to me --
frailty --
a splintered soul glued whole,
crimson shards glittering upon reflective sea,
fingerprinted on memory the blood-stained fetal ball,
a man-boy-woman-child, the mild unmentored, self-raised wonder
behind the impish smile,
the resigned warrior crossed with ancestral scars and shield,
the imperiled confused heart that knows not when to yield,
the malleable tissue spanning vulnerabilities, the
grotesquely gorgeous spirit that knocks me to my knees,
the red clay earth unfallowed, the raingod weeping still,
moon sqaring her back to sun, sun raging at her will,
the wings broken; the wings mending, feathering nests to heal,
Psyche singing its own song, soaring past me,
still would you have feared to know that I saw you mirrored first,
and from first let you go? I saw you mirrored first,
and yet I love you so.

The Perfect Match
By Nordette Adams

I think he's come along,
the man I love,
and he is big and strong,
the man I love,
but we won't be that song
the great love song of songs
I'd be his perfect match,
but feel there is a catch.

The man I love's a dream
in every way it seems,
highly evolved, a brain,
spiritual and sane,
walks in integrity,
respectful of life and me,
a hard working, driven kind,
no slacker, nor idle mind,
compassionate and giving,
honors both dead and living,
a sensitive artist,
not one prone to depart if
the going gets a little rough.
No, the man I love is tough,
a shining soul,
a gift in this world,
unique to behold,
precious,
black pearl.

And I've been told he admires me,
we've bonded in love spiritually,
I'm pretty too,
Yep, I'm an attraction,
enough sometimes
to be a distraction,
but like Daniel or a
know-it-all,
I see writing on the wall.

In an alternatate reality,
where I was not ill,
where I was taller,
where I was more disciplined,
and he was not driven still
to chase a dollar,
where the intellectual
and higher-planed
did not believe me so lame-brained
and backwardly unenlightened,
lost among narrow and frightened
those folks who like me who
are self-deceived
believing Jesus Lord who
on Him have believed
Cupid would be dispatched,
We'd be the perfect match.

But surely here they'll say,
there will come a day,
when my loving Jesus
gets in a smart man's way.
They fear I lay in wait
each day to shout my faith,
seeking diligently to convert
them to follow Jesus.
Oh, the world would be nicer if
folks like me would get a grip;
they'd be happy if I'd revert
back to my old thesis.
But they don't bother to ask
what was that you see, for
I was once a higher-planed one,
chanting God is Me,
popping out of body,
speaking to my guides,
dancing in the light,
taking quite the ride.
So, been there, done that,
but content these days, and so,
know I don't convert a soul.
That's the Spirit's job, you know?
I don't even "witness"
to enlightened ones,
don't have a burden for them,
I let them have their fun
assuming things about me,
having been one once you see,
I know how damned stubborn I was,
I just pray and let them be.

They know who we say Jesus is,
and have access to the Word.
It boils down to what one wants to hear,
and what one thinks she's heard,
what he wants for his life
and if he'll be made whole,
and if he truly wants to let
God be in control.
But ironically, it seems to be,
whether I mention Him or not,
at some point The Enlightened,
think I've hatched conversion's plot,
if not me then some other friend
they know who goes by Christian
and they've got to tell me details
of the friend that's on the mission.
So it's them that's then brought up
Jesus it seems to me,
but they'll never see it that way,
it's a plot to get them. See?
But that's not the only reason
I'm not perfectly pleasing
to the man I find so lovable in kind.

I'm moody. Yes, he's moody too.
He's in debt. Me too, it's true.
I'm too fat, but it's more than that.
I own a dog and a cat.
Furthemore, it's clear to me,
I'm one of many who love him, see.
No, I'm not going to whine,
I'll take a number, get in line,
As ornery as that man can be
and no matter how much
he claims he knows,
he forgets I think he's #1:
He knows who he is! Or so he bellows.
But, I'll stand here in this
damned long line,
be patient, and I'll bide my time,
until they call my number out
so I can sit and tell him about
how I think he's a damned fine catch,
but know I'm not his perfect match.
