Fame at last?
Everybody in Winchester was in a good mood yesterday. It was probably because the wind had dropped and the sun was shining at last. The lady in the upstairs part of W H Smith's was positively Spring mad. It infected her colleague. I also came to the till in a relatively good mood. Okay, so they hadn't got The Complete Guide to Writing a Language but they had got the CGP Complete Revision Guide.
I did wonder whether CGP are ever intending to publish a German one. This was my excuse to talk to her.
"You see, I' m one of the writers and one of the editors of that book, and I'm hoping they're going to commission me to write some of a German one.
She looked gobsmacked.
"I'll have to tell my daughter," she said. "That's our best-selling French revision guide. The kids love CGP."
I know Waterstones are also saying that it is one of their best-selling guides. I've just about earned out my advance, and I've invoiced them for the royalties. I still wait, but they are still within their 30 days term.
The lady behind the till became a bit more subdued.
"Hey, you'd better sign our copies, then," she said." I've never met a real writer before.
I think I was looking at her just as strangely as her colleague was. We both smiled.
If only they knew!
