Melvin Burgess' "Doing it"
1/10/2005 12:21:03 AM    [ Flag as Spam or Inappropriate ]

This book was surprsingly touching and very well written.
I have just finished reading this book, and it was not half as shocking as I had expected it to be. Perhaps after what Anne Fine had said I was expecting the worst.
I was actually quite impressed with it. Burgess did manage to get quite close to what it is really like for teenage boys. There are these strange physical things happening to them. They are dying to experiment and the physical urges are very strong. Yet these boys are also very vulnerable and unsure of themselves.
Burgess shifts from point of view to point of view. That is a little disturbing, but at least we get very close to the boys. He also gives us some glimpses of the way the females involved react to the gentlemen. Oddly enough, the one female whose voice we don't hear is the teacher with whom one of them is having a fling. Also oddly, we occasionally get close to Dino's Mum.
I was totally amazed that the boys did not come out as monsters. They did seem typical teen boys - and I should know something about that after 25 years of teaching them. Yet they did have feeling - remarkably tender ones at times.
I actually think Burgess has done a really good job here.
