Children's Writers' Circle Meeting

How great it is to belong to a critique group focussed on writing for children
Tuesday 8th February
Meeting of WC2
There were four of us there last night - Marcus, Sarah, Anita and myself. We were in the bar form about ten past seven We went into the Osman room at seven thirty. We finally left just after ten. It was an extremely interesting session.
Marcus brought along some new poems, including an old favourite, the "Mirror, Mirror" one. He was most interested in pinpointing an age group for it. There was some discussion about whether seven year olds would understand the word "benevolence", but as Anita pointed out, if a book is marketed for 7-11s, it has to be understood by the 11s, even if the 7s struggle. I decided it was for 9s and Sarah thought 10s. Well, she's the school librarian
Anita bought along Chapter One of a text, which is now out with an editor who had already seen it previously and suggested changes. It did disturb me a little at first. It opens in a very similar way to my Paul's Treasure with the hero looking for a magic stone, with his daughter standing in the doorway. It was well written and enticing, though.
Sarah intrigued us too with more mysterious events surrounding an inheritance, abandoned children and an old house. There is something really good about belonging to a critique group like this. You get to read some really good stuff!
My Chapter 9 of Kiters was well received, with hardly a comment. So, why won't somebody publish it?
