Another Psycho Absorbed in Self-Pity
4/19/2007 5:12:46 AM    [ Flag as Spam or Inappropriate ]

And he performs a one-man massacre nearly to the day a similar tragedy occurred in Columbine.

Cho (rhymes with Joe) was his first name. And while he wasn't quite a naturalized citizen, he had the proper papers to buy a gun--days before the shootings. Those on campus who knew him said he was extremely withdrawn and sulky. Many were afraid of him, including his own teachers, but he committed no crimes so he was allowed to wander loose like an animal waiting for the right time to spring for the kill.

His roommate was questioned on national TV about his relationship with Cho and what a normal day spent with him was like. It seems one day was the same as the other. Cho came and went, involved in his own mind. He spoke to no one, mingled with no one. He was a loner. However, he didn't appear to be sulky at first, although he was withdrawn. Cho was totally absorbed with files in his computer. He sat before the screen for hours and typed until he could type no more. His roommate had no idea what the files were about because he wasn't the type to snoop.

He said that although he instigated daily conversations with Cho at the start of their rooming together, Cho was so emerged in his own world that he never acknowledged that anyone was speaking to him, nor did he respond.

The local police were well aware of him. Cho was picked up several times for questioning and even incarcerated although no one discussed the reasons he was questioned or locked up. The local police had a record on him and watched his comings and goings as much as they could. Not only were they aware of Cho, they were aware of the fear he instilled in everyone he came across at Virginia Tech. However, since he committed no actual crimes, they were helpless to take action against a man they knew to be dangerous--crazy dangerous.

Cho liked to write, but so far no example of his work has been released. We do know, however, that his work was psychotic in nature enough that his teacher tried to get him removed from her class. Although the class was comprised of students who wrote and then had their work critiqued by the other students present, no one critiqued Cho's work for fear he'd kill them. This was the common thought behind those who feared him. They knew he was capable of murder.

But I repeat, you can't lock someone up for being scary. Cho knew enough to keep him mouth shut and his threats to himself until he was ready to exact revenge for the imagined slights the students and teachers committed against him.

Yesterday, his manifesto in the form of a tape was played on the evening news with Brian Williams. It was a high priority shipment, meant to reach the newscaster just after the murders. But the postal clerk in VA wasn't certain of the zip code, so he entered the wrong one. Not that the man was stupid, he looked into the eyes of a killer and was thrown off guard. You see, now it's believed that the two hour span of inactivity was spent by Cho taping his manifesto and delivering it to the post office himself. Then he returned to the campus and resumed his killing spree.

On the manifesto, there were pictures of him smiling, but they were taken long ago, long before he started his murderous rampage. There were also pictures of him wearing a bullet proof vest with a gun in each hand pointing it at the camera.

Cho spoke on the tape and said something about giving everyone a chance and they depressed him so that he wanted to kill himself. Then he reneged and decided to kill them. I'm sorry, but the talk was a bit deranged so I really didn't comprehend his words. However, Brian Williams claimed he was full of self-pity. I picked up on a twisted hatred towards everyone he knew, even though Cho was to blame for his lack of response when someone thrust out the hand of kindness to him.

Yesterday I learned that one thing has changed in schools since Columbine. A young student who was present during the slaughter there has become a public speaker traveling throughout the country. Her message is mainly that if someone in school seems a threat, there's now a toll free number that students can use to make anonymous calls reporting the student's actions or overheard threats. This is great. But suppose the student takes no action until he slings on an ammo belt and roams the halls with an automatic weapon in his hands? There are no laws stopping these would be killers beforehand.

What we need are two things: one is not stricter gun laws, it's stricter enforcement of the laws that are now on the books; and two, we need changes in the law that will permit some form of action against dangerous people before there's a reason to lock them up. This last statement also applies to stalkers who should be contained before they kill as well as ex-spouses hell bent on revenge.
