What's Your Opinion of Boot Camps?

Too few really speak up.
In his column on Boot Camps, Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune referred to talk shows where out-of-control children are sentenced to boot camps by show hosts who wish to help parents set their kids straight. Page even compared their methods to the movie, Cool Hand Luke.
I, myself, never cared for camps wherein Gestapo-like tactics are used to punish teens for their sins against society. Especially after witnessing the 30-minute tape showing seven guards hitting and kicking 14-year old Martin Lee Anderson to death. When the boy was in the throes of death, a Gestapo nurse stood aside with her arms folded across her chest and stared at the dying boy as though this 'had nothing to do with her whatsoever'. This past Friday I watched a jury of their 'peers' set this lethal bunch of killers free on the defense's assumption that the boy died of Sickle Cell Anemia and not from the pummeling he took.
Sickle Cell Anemia is a blood disorder that affects many of our Black Americans, the same as Tay Sachs disease affects those who are Jewish by birth. So coming up with this defense was as easy as saying--Black boy, hmmmmm, Sickle Cell, that's what killed him. I was enraged because these eyes do see and what I saw on the tape was appaling. I couldn't believe that 12 adults watched the same tape and said, 'Mercy, that beating didn't kill him. It was just what he needed'.
In regards to the $450 dollars a day paid by most parents to send their children to these death camps, the sum is outrageous. The Anderson boy wasn't the first to die while being taught to behave in a boot camp. (Show hosts are not charged for sending kids to these camps since it's good publicity for the camp.)Three parents who paid the sum and were rewarded with the death of their children who died while in boot camps claim they were talked into sending their children to a place that promised behavioral change. Bob Bacon of Phoenix, Ariz., said he'd go to his grave regretting his gullibility.
His son, Aaron, died of an infection from a perforated ulcer in a wilderness program in Utah, after the teen's complaints of severe stomach pains after long hikes, poor nutrition and inadequate gear in subfreezing temps were ignored. Other children have been subjected to the following punishments: Forced to consume their own vomit, denied adequate food, being forced to lie in urine and feces, being kicked, beaten and thrown to the ground by guards, Gregory Kutz, a GAO investigator, told the House Committee on Education and Labor. To me, these guards are reminiscent of the Blackwater USA bunch of mercenaries who kill for profit.
What I fail to understand is why the parents on TV Talk Shows wail, cry and wring their hands because their children are out of control. Parents claim the teens sleep around for money, use drugs and alcohol, steal, attack their mothers and so on. When the kids get on they think nothing of telling their parents to mind their own business. "I'm such and such an age and you can't tell me what to do."
As a parent who raised 4 children, 2 boys, 2 girls, I cannot understand when roles switched, when the kids took control and the parents backed off. What I cannot understand is why these parents wait until the kids are in their teens to try and teach them right from wrong. Teaching begins at the age that children reach the understanding phase--genarally around 2 or 3. This is when they should be taught to say, "Please and yes." This is when they should be taught not to make fun of the handicapped people who cross their lives. This is when they have to be taught right from wrong, and that when they continually do wrong, there's accountability. And I'm not talking pummeling. I'm talking sitting them down and teaching them life's lessons about respect for authority and their elders. What the hell ever happened to parents talking to kids?
Is the excuse, "Billy has baseball or football practice and Susie's a cheerleader," and so on become so dominant that it's the overall excuse for parental failures? If so, boot camps will continue until the next century and more children will die as a result.
