A Cheap Aid for Depression & Seasonal Effective Disorder 4/8/2005 12:07:48 PM Light Therapy Depression and Seasonal Effective Disorder (SAD) are caused by a lack of serotonin in the brain. Anti-depressants help but they don’t completely negate the depressive state. Sunlight shining in the eyes helps boost the brain’s serotonin level, which makes the darkness of winter particularly damaging.
In addition to anti-depressants, it was suggested to me in the 1990’s that I try light therapy; but the cost of the units and their replacement bulbs was prohibitive and medical insurance wouldn’t pay a dime for it. Now a company called Lights of America has come out with a Sunlight Bulb, which fits into standard lamps. It uses only 25 watts of power but is the equivalent of a 75 watts bulbs and it outlasts standard bulbs.
I put one in my bedroom lamp and I can feel the difference every time I walk into the room. I bought mine at Walmart for $4.95.
If you suffer from depression or SAD, as I know many writers and artists do, I highly recommend putting these bulbs in your lamps.
