Imperfections and All
7/29/2011 8:12:51 PM
I do believe we are all a work in progress, an ongoing story but some things make us who we are, imperfections and all.
I was thinking about a director in the local community theater and how much she taught me. We had wrapped up Last of the Red Hot Lovers (I think that’s the one) with excellent reviews and sales and took a limo to Dallas for our cast/crew celebration. Charlotte, the director, was planning to have a knee replacement between plays and was looking for a private nurse. I, being a licensed nurse offered my services though more as a friend.
“Oh no” she said, “I couldn’t ask you to do that. Why don’t we trade services? I’ll help you get rid of that east Texas accent while you’re helping me with therapy.”
OUCH! I had not realized my accent was so hideous.
Charlotte immediately explained that it was not an insult but…
That was Charlotte, always reshaping and attempting to perfect.
I honestly considered the offer but before I could even practice pronouncing the twangless inflections it felt so phony I abandoned the thought and politely told her, “It took me years to learn to speak this way – I think I’ll hold what I’ve got, thank you.
She has since passed away and I have so many fond, fun memories of her but that memory sprung up and made me think it’s often our imperfections that make us who we are. I don’t want to be the sugar cookie cut out like a million others.
I can almost hear her say I don’t think twangless is a word.
R.I.P Charlotte, I love you. Said in my best east Texas twang.
