Ponderings, After Knee Repair
1/26/2011 4:30:59 PM
The ebb and flow of life
The last four months of 2010 were interesting. In September I was dragging my foot, but that kind of ailment did not stop me from going to England in October to celebrate my grandsonís birthday and go further to Brussels to renew old ties. On my return late November I had to take care of my ailing knee. I spent Christmas in a rehabilitation centre, enjoying the miracles of modern technology with a replaced knee and counting my blessings. I canít walk straight without pain yet but I am well on the road to recovery. I have reached an age when spare parts have become necessary for survival.

Being less active in social life last month had its repercussions. It appears that my source of energy for writing comes from live interface with people. For example, I had a six and a half hour conversation with an interesting individual in England who missed his ethnic language and wanted to share it with me. That ended in an article. I donít think I talked as many hours with all the people I communicated with since my confinement after surgery. Life stops being bubbly when the sources of conversation dry up.

Under the circumstances the internet was of great help. I enjoyed all the messages I received and a few stood out; a request for first rights of a reply to my bookís TV and Film rights; a boost from Writers Digest with a most favorable commentary on my first self-published book; and some messages from long distance friends who alleviated my hours of convalescence with their jokes and wishes for a speedy recovery. A few weeks down the line my social calendar is filling up with more than doctorsí appointments, a pleasant change to look forward to.

Yes, it is sunny and cheerful in California. Spring is in the air and in my gait too.
I went out and bought a few seedlings for the yard, hosted an impromptu lunch with friends despite the limping, and canít wait to go shopping to give a facelift to my aging living room. Maybe, when all this is over, I will be dancing on my toes
