$15 Dodger Parking
4/15/2007 4:18:16 PM
If you live in Los Angeles or are a baseball fan you are aware of the latest parking lot controversy concerning Dodger Stadium. Frank McCourt, the relatively new owner of the franchise, has jacked parking fees from $10 to $15 per vehicle. He has supposedly used revenues from the increase to hire new parking attendants who will speed up the agonizingly slow exit from the Stadium at the end of games. Patrons are being forced to park in designated spots (often far away from the stadium) and have to leave through a required exit (whether the exits are crowded or not).

The talk in Los Angeles (over television, talk radio, and in print) has not been about the team's performance on the field but the absuridty and outright greed of Mr. McCourt's ill conceived parking scheme.

So here we stand in 2007 and Dodger baseball is all about the location of the stadium and the use of the land surrounding the ballpark. In other words, we are back to 1957 when the Dodgers agreed to bolt Brooklyn due to its lack of parking. Then owner Walter O'Malley was enticed to leave for the west coast as the city of Los Angeles dangled two hundred acres of land for a stadium and a lot that could hold upwards of 16,000 automobiles.

Through the years the Dodgers have made a mint pocketing the parking fees. With such a strong revenue stream there never has been an incentive for ownership to partner with the city to make an effort to use public transportation as a viable alternative for Dodger Stadium.

Unfortunately the city has grown around the stadium site. Freeways, almost always jammed, are even that much more crowded as cars from Dodger games pour off and on to local highways as games begin and end. The luxury of having people predominately arrive by auto is one the city can no longer afford. And if things are not changed soon (i.e. shuttle bus service from Union Station and other key locations and a metro train station at Dodger Stadium), the Dodgers are going to start to feel it at the box office as their fans start to realize that it is a lot easier to pull up a chair in front of the boob tube and enjoy their baseball from that close-up perspective.
