Attended Southern California Writers Conference 10/1/2006 8:05:20 PM I enjoyed my time with other writers this weekend at the Southern California Writers Conference in Palm Springs, CA. So many writers hoping to get noticed by agents, mentors and each other. The most prevailing feeling among them was still one of hope, in spite of the hard truth, that out of thousands of manuscripts, only a very small percentage find their way to one of the last 5 or 6 big publishing houses. Although such a dream is what most wish, today, many simply choose self-publishing.
Self-publishing is easy, the cost is reasonable and it gets the work of the author out there. Today marketing is easier because of the Internet. Also new venues for showcasing books are on the rise.
I like the fact that self-publishing lets the ARTIST move back into their love of writing. Too many writers spend years sending query letters, pounding the pavement and making phone calls, all in the hope of getting their book published. They abandon further writing, their muse gagged and bound while their writing skills become rusty.
It was nice spending time with other writers. I walked away feeling lucky that my dedication to writing is purely one of joy and not my career. I don't choose to spend years pitching a book at the expense of my insatiable muse who's inspiration pushes me to be creative and write more. Afterall, it's the late nights with my muse that I enjoy, not the thought of luring an agent or publisher into considering my novel.
