AMERICARE vs. OBAMACARE

The audacity of an ertswhile insurance man even to attempt elevation to gubernatorial candidacy is brazen enough, but to engage in personal attacks against his party’s front-runner during the regular campaign is plain political stupidity.
Not that I—-e pluribus unum-—care one way or the other. But obviously Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin did; do.
The GOP front runner in the Primary Election race was undeserving of the bombast leveled against her—-even if it were true, which I seriously doubt-—and it would be a shame if the insurance man’s advisor is still around to muck up somebody else’s hopes of higher office.
A runoff election might otherwise be unnecessary, as the candidate whom the front-runner is now required to again defeat would have been relegated to the scrapheap of wannabees if those personal barbs had never been cast. He should send the insurance man a case of Clos Du Mesnil 1995.
Anyway, the previous bottom-feeder suddenly emerged-—but can anyone take seriously a candidate who does not know the difference between Americare and Obamacare? He would like us to believe he is the penultimate conservative. Well, sure, why not?
The outcome of the Republican gubernatorial runoff this month is as predictable as the outcome of the general election in November. It doesn’t take a political wizard to know who will inhabit the mansion on West Paces Ferry after Sonny Perdue vacates the premises, and believe me, we won’t have to worry much about extensive interior decorating.
(Author’s Note: It suddenly occurs to me that if you don’t live in Georgia, you probably have no clue what the heck I’m talking about. And even if you are here in the land of sunshine and goober peas, you probably don’t give a hoot in a holler. The Democrat candidate for governor is so sure of himself he didn’t even show up for Mr. Obama’s visit to Atlanta last week. Tsk, tsk. In ant event, I’m on a roll and I ain’t gonna stop now. Just read on and insert whatever names from your own neck of the woods come to mind. You are probably victims of the same folderol as we are. )
Actually, I was but one of the very few people who voted in the July Primary Election. Why they hold these exercises during the hottest weeks of the summer when everyone with an ounce of sense is either huddled in front of his air conditioner or is scurrying off to the North Pole is beyond me, but in a way, the polling place was the place to be. It was a balmy 71 degrees in there and 94 outdoors.
I even tried to get hired as a “poll attendant” in my county, but they never so much as acknowledged my application. Tough tamales. I probably would have been accused of stuffing the ballot boxes, anyway.
As expected, the polls closed on time and the TV reporters got to pretend the suspense was unbearable. Unfortunately, nothing happened to assuage the boredom, and everything came out exactly as we all knew it would. And should. And did.
But Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin (America’s two biggest losers since Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson) came to the rescue. Of course, the other pretender has Newt Gingrich tripping the light fantastic on his stairway to obscurity. Thanks for nuthin, gang.
Not to change the subject, I was, however, intensely interested in the Department of Agriculture lady who claimed she lost her job because “the White House demanded I resign.” I seriously doubt that’s exactly what happened, as all cabinet heads are under the aegis of the current administration, even if the Oval Office has no knowledge of its underlings peccadilloes-—but it makes one wonder if the insurance man could get his old job back. Might be worth a try (“the citizens demanded I resign!” could be his battle cry.)
But, to reiterate, everyone at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue who could speak English apologized to the lady. And why not? As I commented in a previous blog (July 31,) even Bo was reported to have barked benignly when her name was mentioned.
So-—did the president fire the lady? Jon Stewart on the Daily Show had a PhotoShop rendering of Barack Obama with a Donald Trump hair-do. No resemblance whatsoever.
And now that the CEO of BP is being replaced by a red-blooded American, while the former boss gets his life back in the Steppes, it seems justice may prevail in the world after all. Also, with a bunch of third rate “secrets” pilfered from the Pentagon and our money flowing freely to Afghanistan, what else can go haywire in the swamps of the Potomac?
Maybe they’ll renege on Elena Kagan after she’s sworn in, and we can get her to run for Governor of Georgia.
And what about Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters? Melanie Sloan, the one time federal prosecutor who now heads up Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, may have nailed it when she said, “Some of [Mr. Rangel’s] conduct . . . could be a felony. If the committee lets him off . . . it won’t do a lot to restore the public faith in Congress.”
Ms. Waters, it’s been reported, had even been cautioned by a sitting congressman (who himself had once been emphatically censured by his peers) not to pursue the questionable activity for which she may have to pay the piper-—but she plowed full steam ahead, anyway.
According to the New York Times, 83 members of the House of Representatives (just about equally divided between Republicans and Democrats) have, in modern times, received some kind of ethics sanctions for infractions ranging from tax evasion to conflict on interest to fixing parking tickets. Notably Newt Gingrich, Barney Frank, Joe Wilson and a host of others have gotten their comeuppance with deserved reprimands.
A couple of miscreants since the Civil War even suffered serious consequences for more flagrant crimes and actually were kicked out of Congress.
One of the worst I recall is the saga of James Traficant of Ohio. His misdeeds were so bad he was not only expelled from the House in 2002, he served seven years behind bars. Time apparently heals all wounds: as a free man, it appears he’s running for his old seat this November. Only in America.
Anyway, in July this year, President Obama declared on CBS that the Charles Rangel affair was “very troubling.” Mr. Obama said he feels “Mr. Rangel [has] served his constituents well and deserves to end his career on a better note. . . . My hope is that it happens.” We will have to wait and see.
In case you’re wondering, between the Georgia GOP runoff elections and the continuing soap operas being played out in Foggy Bottom, few of us have had time to ponder the significance of Chelsea and Mark’s pseudo-royal nuptials. Perhaps in a future blog . . .
