Alewife: an invasive species
Years ago the alewife, an alien species from the Atlantic entered the Great Lakes through shipping canals and their populations exploded. 90% of the biomass (living things) in Lake Michigan were alewives. These boney little fish, trash fish really, died off creating a horrible stink. Nobody wanted to go to the beach any more.
The solution was to plant Pacific salmon to eat the alewives. Native species such as the lake trout had been decimated by another alien species, the lamprey eel. The coho and Chinook salmon began devouring the alewives and that made people who like to fish very happy.
The alewives that had upset the ecosystem were under control. Yesterday I walked along the beach and there were dead alewives on the shore. These days that is not unusual. The silvery little fish are not well adapted to the Great Lakes.
