These are my perceptions on the way our media has turned today.
The Media Dilemma

These days all we seem to be bombarded with is news reports of violence breaking out everywhere. It doesn’t matter whether it is overseas or in our own back yard. It’s there. I don’t know about you but I find it rather depressing to listen as the casualty numbers become greater with each bomb attack, with every street gang fight, with protests or whatever else man can think of to cause dissention.
One evening as I sat and watched the news I almost felt sorry for the news commentator. Here she was all chipper for a Monday evening, then as she read report after report about violence erupting I could see her shoulders begin to slump. I don’t blame her! Who wants to deliver to their viewers such depressing news? She was almost grasping for some tidbit of positive news even if it meant the “slight chance of showers” the weather reporter announced. Heck it sure beat what she was offering to her viewers. I bet she was glad when she finished her Monday evening news. My hope is that she was able to salvage the remainder of her evening with something positive.
This is what people deal with on a daily basis. Not only is it on the news, it’s on the internet. Just turn it on and there sitting in front of you is a picture of metal and bodies mangled together from a high speed chase, market suicide bombers, troops holding guns to the heads of innocent citizens in foreign countries. Bold headlines flash out at you. Yes, it’s all there in plain view. And let’s not forget our radio stations. Competition is hard so every piece of news is of the utmost importance to anyone in the news media. This is all very understandable and we, the public do have the option to turn the TV and radios off. Also we have the option to shut down our computers.
Now this is where I must question why do we have to do such an act? Weren’t TV’s radios and computers invented for our pleasure? What happened to the “good news” stories? I’m beginning to enjoy or *ahem* look forward to commercials. Yes, here is where the action is, as the Listerine man and his companion compete on the ice. Like that would ever happen. Or how about the recent commercial from McDonalds, the tune “the more we get together” sticks in your mind long after it’s over. Kind of gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling you think? Then there are those commercials that find you laughing as you wonder who would dream up such things. I don’t think MY cat would jump through a wall for his Temtations. No, he’d just sit and meow, demanding I give him his treat with no tricks. Definitely the Halloween phrase “trick or treat” does not apply to my cat. Now the dog may be fooled into playing such foolish games, but don’t set a large bag of dog food in front of her and expect her to walk away after a few nibbles. No, she’d eat the whole bag and probably burst!
Soon our airwaves will more than likely be swamped with ads on politics. Is there another election in the works? We can’t seem to get away from all the negativity in every aspect of life. It makes me wonder if it’s worth it to keep on investing in the new technology of today. Even our children are getting hit with such negative publicity as the phones become mini-computers, text messaging becomes a new way of bullying or for companies to entice the youth to read their text message. Hey, it’s free advertising for them, why not use it? The sad part is they rope in yet another innocent victim through the use of technology. The pedophiles run rampant on the internet they scour popular social internet services such as Face book, Yahoo chat, MSN and heaven knows how many other places they seek. What had started out to be clean, good fun has now become yet another means of policing by the parents. Oh, there is a good side to the internet but slowly this is becoming of less importance once the crime rate increases. The youth today certainly fight a much harder battle to positive living than many of their parents.
In conclusion I would like to say when the commercials become the highlight we must stop and wonder what the true purpose of TV, Radio and the internet is all about. Those half time sports games sure produce ads far greater than ever before. They have it right as they know what viewers are REALLY watching in today’s society. Yes, we’ll always have a craving for the news, what is going on around the world, but the graphics of people dead in the streets is simply not acceptable for my viewing. This is my personal opinion on news as I see it.
