Elections 2008 on the Bloggin' Trail
10/2/2008 6:29:50 AM
Both the USA and Canada are in election mode. Here's my personal view of the elections here in Canada! Enjoy!
Personal View of Elections 2008

Once again Canadian citizens are in the throes of another election. This is the third in four years. One must wonder as to our leaders’ management skills. What kind of leadership do they possess in running our country? Yes it takes a well educated and a well informed individual to run a country. No one can expect to fill all the needs of every citizen, every organization, every corporation or every other political party. There needs to be a time of growth in a persons’ leadership.

One however, would expect a leader who is one who focuses on the work at hand. A few years ago Mr. Harper only focused on ousting Prime Minister Paul Martin no matter how long it took. He persevered until an election was called and he became Prime Minister of Canada albeit with a minority government. This did not sit well with him. Once again he continued all through the sitting of the House to rattle the opposition parties to the point where none of the leaders of their respective parties could agree jointly on anything. This caused mayhem in Parliament and not much work was accomplished.

The political year for 2008 saw little or no movement as each party grumbled against the other. There was no leadership and quite frankly they were an embarrassment to our country especially on the world stage. It took Canadian citizens hounding the Conservative Government to act on the Brenda Martin case. It is them we need to thank for her release. Now we face another election as Prime Minister Stephen Harper felt the parties could no longer work together. Thus begins the trails of promises, bus tours, and leaders jetting from one side of the country to the other. The mudslinging TV ads have all but shown the true colours of each party. There is nothing more that bothers me than when I see how a party uses distasteful pictures of other party leaders in their ads. It shows a true lack of leadership and in its place a form of bullying is presented. True leaders have respect for those they are running against.

As for Canadian citizens we will hear it all those empty promises. The leaders of each party will dangle the almighty dollar in your face. They will promise you tax cuts, child care, money spent on the environment and so much more. They know what Canadians want to hear. Many citizens are too busy to really listen or simply don’t care, they have their own concerns. The election thus far has narrowed my decision down to two parties. I am clearly and I mean emphatically clearly disappointed that most talk is on the average working family. What if you are unable to work? You live on a meagre income, you don’t complain, you’re just thankful you wake up each day. This was not how you wanted your life to turn out however it has and you live with it.

Why is it we see the politicians spend millions of dollars flying across the country when at the very same time a homeless man dies in a hospital after 32 hours of waiting? It makes the news for a short period of time then everyone hopes it will vanish. He was after all not a contributing taxpayer, just a homeless man. It is this general way of thinking that is most upsetting not only for me but for the countless other Canadians who have been left injured, they develop a disease, or they have lost a job. Every Canadian citizen is a taxpayer. We pay rent, household bills, purchase food, clothing, and other such things. Almost everything is taxed by our government.

Leaders of each political party are rallying for the most part toward the average working families. What about those who don’t have children? Should they be held responsible in giving to these families through their taxes? And our seniors, should they be held accountable for the average working family? Most of the elderly live on their savings every penny counts. They already pay a huge cost of living in senior homes or try to maintain the home they occupy. The cost of living has gone up for everyone. What the rich pay for in gas, so too do the poor. What the working families pay for in child care, so too does the single parent. Not every family’s net income is between 60,000 -80,000 dollars a year. No, the gas bar attendant, the grocery clerk, the waitress, the farm hand and so many more are lucky if they are able to earn 30,000 dollars a year. If this is based on two incomes, then what about the many single adults? So, who are the governments truly serving? Stop and give this question some serious thought.

Those who are on fixed incomes, the elderly, the sick, and the single parent are the hardest workers of all. Each day they must arise, prepare for yet another day of facing taxes, bills and everything financially going up around them. When it becomes a toss up between electricity and food for the family that speaks volumes, yet there is little mention of what help will be given to them. A few years ago the government took money back from all layers of society. The less fortunate were bombarded with the government taking back funds that helped many low income families. Also funds were taken from the middle class families and those on assistance from the government. The high earning didn’t seem phased about the loss of a child benefit cheque. The GST was more of an annoyance to them. It did however open their eyes as to what their governments were doing.

It is understandable that the wallet of the government must be tightened. The best place to start is with the political parties themselves. Their free spending ways on meals, transportation, places of residence and other such things would be the best start. No more squeaking in a raise at the end of parliament. When those who scrape together pennies for their families hear this they find it appalling that our government would take such action.
Another way the government would be able to save millions of dollars would be to stop the “Inquires” they seem to delight in doing. How many Inquires have we had on the environment, child care, government behaviour and so on? The areas that need an Inquiry are simply ignored. Canada is not immune to becoming a country less desirable if the citizens and our governments continue to remain so separated. The present government has a tight leash on what the media is allowed to ask. What does that say to us? It speaks loud and clear. There is only one man at the helm and it is the current PM, so constituents of the present party don’t forget this fact. Why even his own members are reprimanded and discarded fading away into the non-political life.

Our country has prided itself on not being racial, discriminating against others cultures, race, language, religious or political beliefs. A government that blatantly insults the opposition leader just because he may not speak perfect English is an insult on all French speaking Canadians. The Native and French speaking communities have been with us for generations. Why does a government feel compelled to be so rude to our heritage? There will be five party leaders who will be seeking your vote this term. It is hoped that Canadians however “election burnt out” they feel, will take the time to listen to each one of these hard working party leaders and make a choice based on what they feel is best for the country as a whole. It is up to us to look out for one another and a vote is your way of speaking up.

In closing, I would like to add we are the ones our children will follow. We must be the best example for them. We must also respect each and every senior as they are the very foundation of our Canada. Don’t let money become the biggest issue in your vote but rather make our families the most important. Close the gap on the rich and the poor. This article is my own personal view on the elections of 2008. Remember vote with fairness in mind our youth will thank you.

Sincerely,
Dorothy Krusky
