Someone had the audacity to ask me what "MSW" meant ...
Someone had the audacity to ask me what "MSW" meant and, honestly, I did not know! It was an acronym conferred on me when I registered with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in Texas as a social worker, and they never told me what it meant. Ha! So, having been asked the question, I looked it up in the online acronym dictionary, and found out that "MSW" means "Master Social Worker." Hmmm. That has got to be an oxymoron because "Master" assumes some scientific expertise, and there is absolutely nothing scientific about social work (we deal with people who have problems and we connect them with [ever-changing] community resources) and, in some cases, we may act in the capacity of a psychotherapist with "patients" whose own culture is way beyond our own scope of understanding. Where is there any expertise in this? Having found out what it means, I leave the "MSW" behind my name because it makes me giggle! Being able to laugh at yourself is the best of therapy.
