Work ethics in the dinosaur age 25 years ago
3/7/2007 2:34:06 AM
I want to avoid the "back when I was your age" whine but I am puzzled/annoyed/curious (and obviously confused) by what I see in the work ethic of so, so many people. In any job I have had there have always been some who come to play and not work and most often they were weeded out and replaced. We were given jobs and we showed up, did the work, got paid and went home. At some point in the last couple of decades I have seen in business, whether as consumer or co-worker, any ever increasing degree of "I don't give a hoot" attitudes, rudeness, poor performance, you name it.

For a period of several years up to the year 2000, I conducted recruitment, interviewing, hiring and training of staff members, albeit we had little turnover so it wasn't more than two or three times a year. Resumes poorly prepared, interviewees sloven in appearance who bragged about how wonderful they were in their previous umpteen jobs. Of every 10-15 applicants, I may have found one capable person. In the years since, in a different profession and not part of management, I notice a high percentage who work minimally presuming they show up and spend more time "gabbing" then applying themselves. I have noted more and more "management" members fitting the axiom from the "Peter Principle" man rising to the level of his incompetence. More and more just don't seem to care either at the management or subordinate level...come to work, get a check by doing as little as possible.

It grates! And I shall face it again today as I do five days a week, as millions do five days a week. May you have a productive day and ignore the ignorance around you.
