Blogs by Dennis Leischner
I'd love writing if I didn't hate it so much. 3/20/2007 2:52:45 AM By the age of 9 or 10, I had developed close to an obsession for reading, though I can't pinpoint any particular reason for that...most boys are outside playing cowboy at that age. Come to think of it, I did ruin a couple of my mothers' brooms doing just that. Playing cowboy not reading. About the most I can remember writing at that time was book reports for school but by the time I turned into "one of them", ie. teenager, I was also writing because I felt the need to write. Journals, short stories, I think there were a couple of love-sick poems as well. In high school, I wrote a Twilight Zonish short story for English class. After the teacher had read it and announced the author, other students were a bit surprised for I'd never shown that side of myself. When it came to English, it was almost a foreign language. To this day I can't tell you how to diagram sentences or distinguish between a pronoun and an antinoun. I simply wrote! Our journalism teacher decided I should cover sports and write a sports column for the school paper. A most interesting experience that was as I learned one must recognize that writing about reality may cause the someone else to go into a snit. Seems the baseball coach took offense at some of the things I had said about his team. They went on to win three tournaments that year for which I take some credit for irritating the crap out of the coach.
For those of you still awake, I apologize...this is turning into a much longer piece than what I had envisioned. Thus I shall return another time to continue the sad but poignant tale of a writer who loves to write. If he only could conjugate verbs he could rule the world.
May the muse be with you.
