We just gotta try harder!
3/29/2007 3:57:47 PM
I heard some fascinating news on the radio on my drive to work. West Virginia, where I reside is 49th in per capita income with Mississippi still leading the way. It was very disappointing to learn we couldn't even be the best at poverty! The median income was rated at $28,000 per year which amazes me as I didn't realize there were that many jobs paying over minimum wage. And I'm only parting kidding. Read the want ads $6.00 and $7.00 per hour jobs are the norm. Now compute that out over 12 months and that's only half the median income.

I suspected someone must have some money because you can not find a home that isn't much more than a lean to for under $70,000 and figure the mortgage on that! We pay the same high prices for heating oil, gasoline and most products and services as everyone else does. There is no discount for Appalachia folk. And if those are our conditions, I wonder about poor Mississippi.

I do have total faith in the people of our state. With unemployment, disability and welfare receipants all over the place, I'm sure with a concentrated effort by employers and the state government, by this time next year we can proudly claim "We're Number 50". I'm starting to tear up just thinking about that prospect.
