Business is business...

Although societal issues are my main focus in life, I still have to have a way to fund this advocacy. In my case; both situations coincide with each other, thus supporting each other. My business must be successful in order to continue my advocacy.
West Coast Literary Productions provides awareness about mental illness, addiction and homelessness to the public in hopes of reducing stigma, discrimination and unwarranted fears of our most vulnerable. I provide this awareness through my writings and publications.
To finance such a major project such as this, there has to be a steady flow of income. I am totally set-up for business with the exception of still needing to hire employees and generate a fair sized operational fund to complete the 2nd phase of the project by October 19th, 2009.
The books are used as a tool to provide this awareness as well as funding the project and supporting a charity to aid them in their fight against homelessness. WCLP is taking an active role in participating in a permanent solution against homelessness.
Maintaining a business, establishing a market and pushing ahead with a publicity campaign is a lot of work, not to mention that I still have to write a 300 page book as well.
This is where the employees come in. As a registered and licensed business, I need the expertise of others to earn their keep and aid the company to become effective and successful.
Sales do not have to be terribly brisk, but must be consistant. An experienced sales representative with the experience and knowledge to ensure that this is maintained will be the bread and butter of the company.
The success of the business emminates from the effiency of the office. The office must be stream-lined and productive during every minute of the day.
As for myself, book research and writing must become full-time employment. There is a great deal of work to do which leaves little to no time for supervision of staff. The employees must be assertive and able to work well unsupervised. A business is only as good as the employees.
This is a very difficult task to find the right people for the job. A careful screening, interview, and critique during a training period is critical to determine if this person is suitable for a position in your company. Always include at least a 90 day probation period in which you can make the final decision to make the position permanent or not.
Payment options, refund policy and availability are all all major factors that affect the sales. Keeping a simple plan is essential. Free delivery within the city, same day delivery in town or shipping within 24 hrs are methods used to promote sales.
A catalog of products and services given out to customers also influence sales. To non-customers, these catalogs will be available for sale.
Of course there are legalities, accounting, and government policies to adhere to. We cannot forget about start-up financing and operational funding. Without this in place, you can forget about ever entering self-employment.
There are a lot of hoops to jump through to make your dream come true. I will keep you informed of new advances and hints on how you can establish yourself as author and businessman or woman. Have fun!
