The tortuous route from idea to bookshelf
7/29/2009 1:40:17 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

It sounds simple: get an idea, write it down and get published; but that reckons without fate's intervention.

I'm working on my seventh professionally published book (not counting my little booklets). It's the longest yet, standing at over 350 pages and seems to have taken half a lifetime to bring to this point.

The text itself is complete and has already been typeset by my publisher Capall Bann. Being the worry bucket that I am, I requested to proof read it myself before it went to print. Good job I did as I found that the technology of writer and editor had not worked well together. Footnotes and photograph captions had floated free from their moorings and gone off into the body of the text. Italicised passages had stood themselves to attention and bold lettering had become timidly standard.

When I began proofing the book, my co author, Tye, took half off my hands and read it through. We sent our respective corrections to the publisher individually and sat back to await the finished volume. As I waited I began to worry and made enquiries. My fears proved to be well founded. As she'd come late into the writing process, Tye did not entirely understand the layout and so missed the floating footnote phenomenon all together, along with the upright italics, assuming the book was supposed to look that way.

Rather than ask her to go back over her work, I asked Jon Day at Capall Bann to print off the revised book so that I could check it through. He tried. And he tried again, but something had gone wonky between the file and the printer. It would not print out. After waiting a couple of months we decided that it wasn't happening and Tye posted me her half of the original galleys. I'm two thirds of the way through these and have a mountain of corrections for the editor to implement. Lucky chap!

I do wonder, though, whether my book will ever make it out of its cyber prison onto the page and into the book shops, both online and physical. If it does, you may want to take a look at it. It is called Green Living, Sacred Life by Susan M. Phillips and Tye Jamie Coxston. Wish us luck.
