Now That I've Had My Coffee
4/4/2007 9:06:46 AM

I can now face this blog with clear...well, almost clear, head of mine to tell you about the nice thing some friends did for me last night.

I played this just right; everyone thought it would be a surprise, but as I mentioned last week, two people who don't even know each other, but they know me, told me about this upcoming party...da' cat was outta the bag.

I was to meet my friend Cal at his office and he said, "do me a favor, see if you can make sense of this order." I said "sure"

After reading the order two or three times I said "All this order amounts to is extending it one more day, no big deal." But Cal, trying to be sly said, "This is so confusing," thats when I reminded him he was reading upside down.

After this slow bit of stalling I said lets go to Cannon Beach and get some cornbread. Believe me, there's this restaurant in Cannon Beach, Oregon that has the best cornbread I've ever had, even better than my ex-wife, but I digress.

Cal shrunk at the idea of Cannon Beach, then I said lets try this mexican joint in Gearhart, again with the indiffernece and told him that I was hungry so lets get going.

So...what Cal didn't realize was that I saw friends going into McKeown's just down the street from the radio station. A nice place, good food, friendly people and all that yadda yadda. I knew that's where we'd end up.

When we walkede downstairs from the office, crossed the street and headed to McKeown's, Cal didn't have to say where we were going...then we walked in, not to a table, but straight back to the banquet room where I found about 30 people waiting for me with smiles on their faces, and cameras clicking...just hope none of them are undercover cops...trying to nail me for past misdeeds.

The long and short of it was that I put on the totally surprised look on my face and said..."enough of this lets eat." To which this crowd never turns down free food.

My now former co-worker John, said "wasn't this a great surprise?" and I said, very quietly so no one else could hear..."Johnny boy, I knew about this last week from two other people, whom shall remain nameless."

Just the look of surprise on his face was worth the price of admission. John and Cal had gone down to the pawn shop and found a gold (just don't bite down on it) pocket watch, and two books by Garrison Keiller.

As we walked back to the parking lot where are cars were parked, I told Cal that this was so much fun, maybe I'd retire again next week.

Well that was my night, how was yours?
