Some of my early favorites
4/7/2007 11:40:58 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

I was watching something on CSPAN the other day, and someone was interviewing a writer...sorry, name of author and book escapes me at this moment, but the interviewer asked the guest who some of her early influences happened to be.

I thought about this for a while too. Who were some of my early heros and why?

This list is no where near complete, but is a str, ong sampling.

I was impressed early on with Jack London and his work, but it never gripped my mind.

One day while in the library I came across a book by a guy named James Weldon Johnson, I was hooked. "Gods Trombones" was awsome, I couldn't put it down. Keep in mind this was the early sixties and except for the bible, I didn't have a lot of other written works to cling to.

Towards the end of my senior year in high school, I once again found myself in the library and this time I found Langston Hughes. His writing was honest, cclorful and compelling.

Then during my first year in college, a friend said, "I just read a book by James Baldwin, he loaned "Giovanni's Room" to me, and I knew from that moment these influences had shaped what I for the first time in my life, more than religion, more than love, more than anything I had a passion for...I wanted to be a writer. This became a dreamm deferred though for a number of years. But I never lost sight of the words these combined artists left on my soul. And those are some of my favorites.
