The Write ring Mystery ...six and seven
7/12/2007 9:33:29 AM
the plot thickens
Anita walked into the room, everyone looked up when she stopped and stood there a puzzled look on her face.
“They are gone. The kitchen is clean but no one is here, I looked in their rooms, they are empty.” She hesitated, then said, “Their car is gone also.”
“Probably just took the evening off.”Charles offered as an explanation. ”Everyone deserves a night off now and then.”
“Anita I think you are making a big deal out of nothing.” Phyllis said,”You trying to spook us out?
Laura spoke for the first time.
“Have any of you come up with a good plot yet. I am not having a lot of luck. Starting without an outline, just taking it from the top of my head doesn’t work for me. I hate having pressure put on me. I will have to start over tomorrow with an outline first.” She said, then added, “guess I’ll be burning the mid night oil.”
Anita walked to the phone and picked it up; she turned to the group, “This phone is dead.”
All eyes were on her as she hung up the phone. Looking around the room she asked,
“Do any of you have a cell phone, mine is not working for some reason.”
“Here use mine.” Larry stood and offered his. Taking it Anita flipped it open and stood there. A Look of fear crossed her face.
“It doesn’r work.” She said quietly.
Charles and Robin immediately took their phones out to check them. Neither worked. The others were watching. They looked at one another. Phyllis stood up and headed for her room,
“Mine is upstairs, maybe reception is better there.”
“How far are we out of Denver?” Larry asked.
“What I want to know is, just where the hell are we?” Charles asked,”Did anyone pay attention to the route we took to get here.
Phyllis came back into the room.” It doesn’t work up there either.”
I had already checked mine out. I felt a sudden panic realizing we were stranded in a mountain lodge with no communication or vehicle. I didn’t want the others to know how frightened I felt.
If someone was trying to scare the bee-gees out of us they were doing a great job. Was this just part of the scenario, getting us all worked up, putting us in the center of a mystery? If they thought it would help us to produce, I think they were wrong; all we could do now was wonder how to get out of here, but obviously, we weren’t going anywhere, at least not tonight. Surely the caretaker would be back in the morning.
“I vote we all quit getting panicky and go to our rooms and get busy with our stories.” Laura said gathering up her drink and bag. “Good night.”
I went up the stairs the hair standing on my neck. I couldn’t help but glance over my shoulder as I went down the long hall to my room. I had no more than shut my door when Anita knocked lightly and came in.
“I don’t feel safe.” She said,” I wish I hadn’t said anything until in the morning about my leaving. Are you going to stay?” she asked. I didn’t know what to say.
“I am hoping in the morning we all feel better about this. I made you some real tea today, I need to drink something besides soft drinks and coffee my self.”
I put ice in the glass and filled it with the amber liquid and handed it to her then fixed one for myself. I handed her the little wicker basket holding the sweet and low and she broke two open and stirred absentmindedly. “I can’t stay. This has really bummed me out. First thing in the morning I have to figure a way off this mountain
