When I was a Kid 8/10/2007 5:24:13 PM Being happy with who you are, where you grew up, and the life you've lived is a real blessing. When I was a kid
When I was a kid I ran everywhere. I loved to jump. I would run across the yard and leap into the sandy creek bed. Broad jump, pole vault, I was in a hurry to live and I ran head first into it, nothing could happen quick enough to suit me. As far back as I can remember I dreamed of being married and having children and coming home to the Valley Ranch through the snow to spend Christmas with my mother and daddy. That was my goal in life. We grew up in a great place. The Texas Panhandle. First we lived on the farm but when I was eleven we moved to the ranch. We had a pretty white house nestled in a green valley between canyon walls. We would drive for miles through pasture land and then we would top the hill and there it was. It was beautiful, it was home. There was always something to do and we had miles of land to do it in. My Dad ran a cable from the top of the windmill platform to the ground, and attached a pulley; we would climb the ladder to the top grab the pulley, swing off and slide down the cable. It was fast and it hurt like the dickens when you hit the ground but we would jump up and do it again. Living in a canyon, there was a cliff to the west of the house across the creek. I draped myself in lace curtains and performed, the whole canyon was my stage and the animals were my audience. I spent hours dancing and singing and playing the part of a princess. My brother dug a throne in the side of the cliff and I was queen of all I surveyed. Other times I would walk down the creek and lie beneath the cottonwoods daydreaming and listening to the rustle of the leaves. I can still hear and smell them if I close my eyes. The leaves clattered and had a distinct odor and the Katie-dids sang their song. It was cool and shady on the creek bank. It was magical there. There was a shallow pond close to the windmill and a lone willow tree. We had a flat bottomed boat and we spent hours poling around the pond pretending we were in Africa. I was the jungle princess then. We climbed the tree and lay on the branches and we could yell like Tarzan the ape man. Or we searched for treasure like Sabu the jungle boy. Some days I rode the horse and then I was the sweetheart of Gene Autry, a beautiful black eyed Senorita. When you live twenty miles out in the country with no neighbors you learn to entertain yourselves. All the different parts I played, and all it took was an old lace curtain and a great imagination. Saturdays was shopping day and we went to town to the movie, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers or Johnny Mack Brown, and ate hotdogs at the Coney Island and bought an ice-cream on the way home. I learned to drive when I was eleven on an old ford tractor. My dad trusted me with the car when I was twelve. Course I striped the gears in it but it was a wonderful life. If I could do it all again, I would. Some folks didn’t get to have what we did, we didn’t have money, and Mother and Daddy may have been struggling but Bud and I never knew it. My brother and I have talked about it and neither one of us can remember any unhappiness. We had wonderful parents and life was good....
