Learning the 'Facts of Life'

Exposure to the ways of the world
Now I am a lady who believes in minding her own business, unless of course I am asked my opinion or advice. Then I am hesitant to butt in as I know you can sure open up a can of worms then. People ask but do they really want to hear what you think? Sometimes yes and sometimes no, so you need to study on it before you jump right in and say what you think. I had a call from a young mother yesterday about an incident that alarmed her concerning her twelve year old daughter. I donít know what she wanted me to say but I donít believe it was what I told her. Seems a young teenage female in the neighborhood entertained the girl, her friend, and a neighbor boy by telling them of her sexual exploits. The two twelve year olds went home and told the mother. She was horrified. I can see where she would be upset but I donít think it was enough to get Ďrigor-mortisí over. In the first place I doubt seriously the teenager was telling the truth. She comes from a closely guarded family, and a very strict mother. I feel the teenager was trying to impress the younger ones with her worldly knowledge, much like small children try out new words, and later on will regret her exaggerations. I told the young mother in question to recall when she was that age and the tales she heard, or told herself, that she wouldnít want revealed to her parents and would die of humiliation if it was so. Often as we grow up and become parents we want to protect and buffer our children from the facts of life but that can not happen, they are going to be exposed sooner or later. Itís commendable that the girls shared this with their mother and she had an opportunity to talk about it with them and to be on the alert for any further incidents such as this one. Until then I donít think she should go to the girlís parents. Kids will be kids. As far as the teenager is concerned she gained no respect from the younger ones. If she only knew the damage she did to her own image. I feel sorry for her. She really needs someone to point out to her how she degrades herself. The young mother could befriend the girl and guide her in another direction. Course this is just one old womanís opinion. Till next time, Aunt Polly
